Celebrating Black Love: My 5 Movie Picks

I gotta tell you, there's nothing better than black love.

And when a twice-divorced single mom tells you that, you better believe it!

Now don't get me wrong, there are times when I lose faith in the power of black love and the ability for black male female relationships to be successful.

But every now and then my hope is renewed. Like this past weekend, when I was in Los Angeles and spent a few days with my girlfriend and her husband and son.

Being in their presence, reminded me of the beauty and power of the black family.

It reaffirmed my belief in spiritual principles like headship and submission, when practiced properly.

And it reminded me of what I really miss about marriage, two people working as a team toward a common goal. My team has only one coach these days. I'm pretty capable, but there are times when I wish I had some help.

So when my faith in black love starts to wane, I turn to my favorite cinematic reminders. And in celebration of black love today, here are my top five movies that inspire me to believe in black love.

1. Love and Basketball: Definitely one of my all-time favorites. And when Sanaa says, "I've loved you since I was 11 and the isht just won't go away," I still get a little goose pimply.

2. Jerry Maquire: How could we not love Regina and Cuba's characters in this flick?

3. Brown Sugar: There's nothing better than true friends who become lovers.

4. Mahogany: This classic will always make the list.

5. Jason's Lyric: That romantic rowboat scene? Enough said.

What would you add to the list?? What movies or moments inspire you to still believe in black love?

I think that Love Jones should top the list. To each his own, at least we have a choice of movies.

  3. Kathina says:

I would add “Love Jones” I love that one…especially the poem!
