Recent Study Finds BPA Makes Canned Food a Risky Choice for Pregnant Women

Expectant moms, it may be time to clean out your pantry and get rid of your canned foods. If you were thinking of “going green” or eating more produce and fresh fruits and veggies, this is a great time to do it.

New study finds that BPA makes canned food risky for pregnant women. BPA or bisphenol A, which is an estrogen-like chemical, contaminates 92% of food from metal cans. The National Toxicology Program has said it has some concern that BPA alters brain development, behavior and the prostate gland in children before and after birth.  Five states ban BPA in certain children’s products, as does three counties in New York and the city of Chicago.

As a pregnant woman you should become more conscious of the chemicals in the things you consume throughout the day, especially in canned foods and bottled drinks. Even your plastic water bottle should be BPA free in order to prevent contamination and birth defects.
Check out this article for more information on BPA and the recent study.

Instead of buying canned, you can do fresh or frozen fruits and veggies, but try to eliminate your consumption of canned foods. If this isn’t motivation to eat healthier during your pregnancy, I don’t know what is!
