Buying Your Toddler's First Bed: What Every Mom Should Know
By Annie Friedman

Is it time to transition from a crib to a big bed? Choosing you toddler’s bed is one of the most important decisions you will make. Here are a few tips that will help you make the right decision first time around.

Do your research. These days no one has time to run around looking for the perfect bed, especially if you're pregnant. The internet can be very helpful when picking out the latest styles, furniture, bedding and the best prices.

When you find a cot, make sure it’s good quality, easily adjustable, and that the cot rails meet safety standards of 2 3/8" apart. The cot rails also need to be at least 9 inches from the mattress when lowered and 26 inches above the mattress when raised. Also consider buying a cot that converts into a junior bed for your toddler to save you money later on.

Test the stability of the cot by shaking it to make sure it feels strong and stable. Also consider if a standard cot mattress will fit. When choosing the best mattress, find one you can afford and one that is comfortable.

The options of beds are endless; bunk beds, trundle beds, a bed with rails, and twin beds. Most kids are ready to transition from a crib to a toddler bed between the ages of two and three. A sign that your child is ready for a big bed is if they try to climb out of their crib.

Many parents move their kids from cribs to bigger beds in stages. For instance, you can first try a low toddler bed and get a real bed later on.

It’s a good idea to choose a bed with guard rails for safety and remove them as the child grows. Also consider placing a carpet or something soft on the floor below the bed in case your child falls out.

The trundle bed is good for when your child has a friend sleepover. Many child beds also come with drawers underneath, for added storage. While children also love bunk beds, make sure your child is ready and won't roll out of the top bunk.

Some good places to shop are Target, Sears, Toys "R" Us or locally-owned furniture stores. Also, consider investing in a waterproof mattress cover for when your toddler stops wearing diapers at night.

Buying a bed is an investment for your child and your family, so carefully consider everything, especially safety factors. Nothing will feel better than seeing your child comfortable and happy in their new bed, so sleep tight!
