For this Father’s Day, instead of just a tie, give the black man in your life some life-saving tips on healthy living. We want more black men to be around for many more Father’s Days to come.  And many of the health problems that disproportionately affect and kill black men could be completely avoided with simple precautions such as maintaining a good diet rich in vegetables, fruits, fish and whole grains and having a regular exercise routine.

Check out these five top health risks for black men from www.blackdoctor.org, and what can be done to avoid them.

Heart Disease

What to do:
   1. Maintain healthy weight
   2. Engage in physical activity
   3. Cut back on fatty and high in sodium foods
   4. No smoking!
   5. Work with doctor to lower high blood pressure, high blood pressure and stress

Cancer

What to do:
   1. Consult doctor for regular cancer screenings; black men should be screened at least 10 years   before the recommended age for white men
   2. As for heart disease, maintaining a healthy weight and a fiber-rich diet is key
   3. No smoking!
   4. Reducing exposure to potential carcinogens (cancer-causing substances), that includes radon, asbestos, radiation and air pollution

Car Accident Related Injuries

What to do:
   1. While driving, wear seat belts!
   2. Follow regulated speed limit
   3. Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or any other substance that will affect motor skills
   4. Don’t drive sleepy
   5. Take driving breaks

Stroke

What to do:
   1. Maintain low cholesterol
   2. Maintain low blood pressure
   3. If the father has diabetes, make sure he is following the doctors treatment plan
   4. Limit saturated fat and cholesterol in diet.  No trans fat!
   5. Maintain a healthy weight, and incorporate physical activity into daily routine.  No smoking!

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

What to do:
   1. Don’t smoke (this includes second hand smoke)
   2. Minimize exposure to chemicals, excessive dust, cooking gas, and air pollution\
   3. There is no cure for COPD, but there are many treatment plans so have your father ask which one works best for him

So for this father’s day, forget the trip to the rib joint and take dad out for some salads and fruits!  Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising are the habits that you and your father need to live a happy and healthy life.  Happy Father’s Day!!!
