Kids We Love: Meet 14-YO Dusan Brown, Voice Actor in New Disney Junior Series, “The Lion Guard”; The Oscars, His Parents & Never Giving Up
This month, Disney Junior launches its newest hit series, “The Lion Guard,” a spin-off of the classic The Lion King that continues the epic storytelling of the movie. The show follows the adventures of Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, and his diverse group of friends as they unite to protect the Pride Lands. (Watch a clip here)
One of the voice actors in The Lion Guard is 14-year-old Dusan Brown, who plays the voice of Beshte, a friendly hippopotamus, and best friend to the main character. Dusan says he was inspired by seeing the 1994 film The Lion King for the first time as a child and later seeing the very amazing, The Lion King on Broadway, which helped him decide that acting was his passion. He asked his parents if he could audition for a role in the Broadway show and started auditioning for various opportunities. I interviewed Dusan by phone to learn about his experiences and the new Disney channel show, The Lion Guard.
A: “It’s really fun. I feel like if I work hard and keep working, I’ll be able to master my craft and help others. Starting young has helped me become a well-rounded individual. The sky’s the limit!”
Q: How influential are your parents in your career?
A: “They were a big help. My parents never let me quit.”
Q: What advice would you give to young actors?
A: “Don’t stop until you’re proud. Keep going until you get that big break. What’s for you is for you; what isn’t, isn’t. “
Q: How important is it to have diversity on a show such as this one?
A: “It’s very important because it takes place in Africa, so you’d want to have every race possible; wherever you go, you won’t see only one race of people. We want there to be as much diversity as possible.”
Q: Were there any other movies that impacted you the way the Lion King did?
A: “Yes. The first was Transformers. Next it was the Book of Eli, then The Equalizer, only to be one upped by the new DeadPool movie.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in two years?
A: “In two years, I’ll be in the front row of the Oscars winning three awards for writing, acting, and directing all in one night.”
Q: That’s pretty awesome!!
The story of Kion and his friends was introduced in the animated television movie “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,” which premiered on Disney Channel in November 2015 and became the #1 primetime cable TV telecast of 2015 among Kids 2-5.
