Getting the Media To Tell Our Breastfeeding Story Right: Kimberly joins Kellogg Foundation panel at NABJ Health Media Institute

One of my key motivations for creating Black Breastfeeding 360 was my frustration that the media doesn’t accurately tell our story. So when the W.K. Kellogg Foundation asked me to join their panel for the National Association of Black Journalists Health Media Institute in Washington, D.C. last week, I was all in…The panel was hosted by one of my fav journalists, Michel McQueen Martin, journalist and correspondent, Tell Me More with Michel Martin, National Public Radio.

We had a robust and engaging conversation about the importance of exclusivity and duration in breastfeeding, what we can do in our community to encourage more breastfeeding and how our men feel about the situation. Lots of real talk! Check out a few pics!

I have been breastfeeding my baby for just over 2 years now (his b’day was 3/28) and I am thrilled to say that he is an EXTREMELY healthy, happy, and intelligent little toddler. He is confident and loves people, while at the same time he feels so safe with mom and dad. I have to say that I was THRILLED to see the talk around Black moms and breastfeeding (bebe as he says.) My baby has been sick 2xs in 2 years, he can count to 18, and reads license plates – accurately. It is one of the most important things I will ever do for him in my life and I am grateful (even after a C-section, and him in the NICU) that I was able to do it! I’m gonna keep on reading around the site now. Thank you so much for talking about it!!!
