“I Declare I Am A Girl” Event Gives Me Goose Bumps; Check out Pics & Videos

"I am a girl who declares that is a honest and caring person. I also am a child of god."

"I am a girl who will stand up for what i believe in."

"I am brave and strong with sisterhood by my side."

"Still i rise, still i fly, I see my haters tell them hi."

"Haters are my motivators."

"I will do better each day, step by step."

Powerful stuff. This is just a few of the statements the young black girls who came to our  "I Declare I Am a Girl" event last week wrote on our "Declaration of Girlhood". After the girls used papers, pens, markers and more to write their own declarations, we hit the streets with our 40-ft declaration to reclaim girlhood for every young black girl. Check out the pics below and YouTube video.   (and yes, that is Michael running around in front)

We had such a fabulous turnout. And the night was full of goose bump moments as we listened to young girls from Brooklyn to New Jersey share their thoughts, anxieties and wishes on everything from periods to girl power. (special shout out to the parent coordinators and students from IS 68 in Brooklyn–your girls really rock!!)

The screening of "A Period Piece" by Camille Holder-Brown sparked an amazing conversation about transitioning into womanhood, and Camille led a candid conversation covering all the details my mom never told me about what your period is, what to do when it happens and what it means…

Afterward, celebrity DJ Beverly Bond took to the floor to speak to the girls about combating negative images in hip hop music and magazines and what it means to be a black girl who rocks!

And then as a grand finale, we rolled out the Declaration of Girlhood and all the girls got down to business defining themselves. It was such a good night!  A special thanks to Camille and Cinemomma Pictures, and my co partners in mama muscle, Dionne Grayman of Mothers Empowered and Lucinda Cross of www.corporatemomdropouts.com

Check out the amazing pics of all the girls (and Michael, who simply wrote, I am a boy.)
