MOMPRENEURS WE LOVE!  Vanessa Bush: From Corporate Life to Culinary Queen

This former magazine exec turned a passion for cooking into a sweet business, Around the Way Gourmet.

By Annie Friedman

When writer Vanessa Bush left the corporate world in 2008 and decided she was ready to pursue another passion — culinary arts — she had no idea how successful she would be. Bush had always enjoyed cooking and received many compliments from those close to her on her delicious meals. The support she got helped her to take her passion to the next level and led her to start a food blog — "Food Lovers like Me" — which combined her writing and culinary talents.

After starting her blog, she enrolled part-time in culinary school at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York City while still working as a freelance writer. Bush wrote articles for QSR Magazine, a restaurant trade industry magazine and was also guest blogger for Nutritiondata.com, a health and nutrition website. She also started doing recipe development for Kaboose.com and teaching classes for Magazine Writing Online so she could work from home and set her own schedule.

As she continued to pursue her culinary career, she had to take care of her two children, Myles, 9 and Madison, 6.

“Sometimes I feel I could be in the Big Apple Circus because I’m juggling so many things at once,” Bush said. “But working from home and being my own boss allows me to be here for my kids, whatever they need, whenever they need it, which is extremely gratifying.”

Bush’s culinary business, Around the Way Gourmet, began in 2009 and gave her the chance to serve good food and be a part of others’ special celebrations. Stating that people don’t stop and take the time to enjoy another’s company over a good meal, her business gives her the opportunity to make that happen.

Brenda Lloyd, Bush’s long-time friend, has her own website business and helped her put together the website for Around the Way Gourmet. Bush says the moment she first saw the website they had been discussing for months come together was one of the most memorable moments since opening her business.

“The website helped crystallize everything I want my business to represent: comfort, professionalism, and appreciation for the art of good food,” Bush said. “I got a ton of great feedback from my friends and it felt great to have their support in my new venture — and to know that they would help spread the word.”

When it comes to starting your own business, Bush recommends people educate themselves before beginning a new venture in their life. She also tells people not to be afraid, to ask for help and to admit that you don’t know something.

“When I left the corporate world in 2008, I did it knowing that my children needed more of my time and attention, and I don’t regret it for a minute — even on those days when I feel pulled in a million directions,” Bush said. “I know my children are flourishing — and I get to see it, which puts such a smile on my face and in my heart.”

Bush hopes she is setting a good example for her children by letting them know that there are no limits — and if you believe in yourself, you can do it.

“I hope that I am setting a good example, a blueprint for them to follow, by the actions I am taking and the decisions I am making in my own life,” Bush said. “Kids watch everything we do, so we can’t just talk about it; we have to be about it.”

  1. The only way to drive safely during the day is to own a pair of sunglasses.
Well there are three possible answers; Glasses, Contacts
or Both, but it’s ultimately up to you to decide what works best for you and your lifestyle.

But, even with night vision, the experience was thoroughly creepy.

This is a wonderful advancement in coffee technologies because it allows you to pre-brew your coffee so that it remains
